Letters / Upside down

Shetland Better Together ran up the Union flag at their display at the Cunningsburgh Show. This would have drawn no comment at all, had the defenders of the Union put the flag the right way up!

They flew the flag upside down for most of the morning and early part of the afternoon.

To fly the flag upside down can have two meanings. One is a sign of distress; the other is to insult the Crown and the Commonwealth.

Yes Shetland held back from reporting the matter to the local constabulary, as flying the flag upside down is a crime in the UK.

Perhaps, the distress was the prospect of Ruth Davidson, Tory leader in Scotland, coming to visit their stand. Or is it a subliminal message about how the Better Together campaign feel they are doing in Shetland?

One person on the Better Together stand complained that ‘their flag’ is too easy to put up.
