Letters / No renewables

Thank you James for your letter explaining Sustainable Shetland’s policy (Sea change required; SN, 26/01/14).

Before it will even think about the idea of linking Shetland to the National Grid, the organisation requires what it admits is a highly unlikely transformation in the social, environmental and energy policies of Shetland, the UK and probably Europe as well.

Even if this unlikely revolution actually happened the organisation is still unlikely to want a cable to the mainland.

So, to summarise, Sustainable Shetland does not want the islands connected to the National Grid by a cable to the mainland.

This policy means Sustainable Shetland not only opposes Viking Energy but it wants to stop ANY new commercial renewable energy development in the islands.

No tidal power. No wave power. No onshore wind power. No offshore wind power. No new renewable energy industry. No new jobs. No new money to regenerate local communities.

Is this really what its members want?
