Letters / Better Together? Absolutely!

So that’s it then? Scotland’s future! We were promised answers. The reality – nothing more than another lengthy instalment of the SNP’s aspirational wish list.

The Scottish people deserve better than vague promises on matters like childcare, which would be in the gift of whichever administration forms a government in the event of Scottish independence.

It is totally reprehensible to attempt, as the nationalists are doing, to persuade the people of Scotland to throw away all the advantages of belonging to a United Kingdom for the dubious uncertainties of independence.

The devolved Scottish Parliament has power over schools, hospitals, police and transport, so we have a say in the running of services, which affect our daily lives.

By remaining in the UK we have the strength and security of being part of one of the biggest economies in the world, while retaining influence over it through continued representation at Westminster. Better together? Absolutely!

Every year in Scotland there is £1,200 (10%) more in public spending per man, woman and child than the average throughout the UK – a figure no nationalist can deny.

Much of that sum is spent by the Scottish Parliament on priorities such as the NHS and education, over which we, the Scottish people, have influence through our elected representatives. Better Together? Surely, we are!

Neither can the nationalists deny that, as a nation of some five million people, we enjoy the advantages of having a home market twelve times that in number, without burden of tariff or of having to meet with conformity requirements imposed by foreign governments. Better together? We’ll buy that!

Better Together is about continuity and retaining what is best in being part of a United Kingdom – sharing resources and spreading the load, yet still having a real say in our own future through our own devolved Scottish Parliament. Vote NO in the referendum.
