Letters / Invitation extended
The wishes and aspirations of your regular contributor (Mr G Harmer) in his “Discriminating and rude” letter (SN, 04/12/13) have indeed resulted in more people visiting and following the Yes Shetland Facebook page (now up to 353 likes), while the Yes Shetland Open Group Facebook page, stands at 130 likes.
Here people will see information given and debate carried out to a high standard.
On the subject of debate, another No supporter posted a question on our page, and although it opened with “Now we have Salmond at his most stupid. His recent creation “Scotland’s Future” has to be one of the propagandist’s stupidities of all time…” the serious subject of Trident on Scottish soil was the main subject.
On both Facebook sites there followed many contributors’ responses explaining to Mr Tinkler (Pure posturing; SN, 01/12/13) how he might have been confused with the “no-nuclear” stance of an Independent Scotland and being a member of NATO, which has members with nuclear submarines.
As it was said before, we welcome debate from all sides and, if your readers wish, they can view Mr Tinkler’s original question and the answers that followed.
The invitation is extended to your other contributor, Mr Harmer, and anyone in Shetland who is unsure how to vote. We do not seek to “convert”, but we will try to help with answers.
We still get asked “can Scotland afford it’s own defence force”? Now that is straightforward.
These and other questions can also be debated in the Scalloway Hall on Tuesday 10 December between 8 and 9pm, when Yes Shetland will be holding a public information meeting.
