Letters / Flawed logic

I refer to Mr Harmer’s letter regarding SNP tax plans (Beware SNP tax plans; SN 15 July 13).

Nicola Sturgeon has said that her party will implement a fairer tax system in an independent Scotland – one in which everyone pays a fair amount of tax based on income.

To be able to conclude that this policy would result in the wholesale repossession of cars and houses indicates that Mr Harmer possesses lively, if flawed, powers of logic.

The present UK tax system is grossly unfair. Many of the wealthiest individuals and institutions in the land pay no tax at all simply because they can afford to pay large fees to tax specialists. Any political party whose main aim was to reform the tax system would be likely to get my vote.

In the run up to next year’s vote I am sure that many of the arguments put forward by the opponents of independence will be well reasoned and will add usefully to the debate. Many, on the other hand, will be simply plain daft and will help the “Yes” camp.

Keep up the good work, Mr Harmer!
