News / At long last: a taste of summer

SHETLAND was enjoying some of the best weather anywhere in the UK on Wednesday, and definitely the warmest day of the year so far.

Temperatures reached 18 degrees at Sumburgh, while Lerwick and Baltasound were only slightly cooler. Some people on the west side reported temperatures in the mid twenties in sheltered spots.

Fair Isle meanwhile was basking in the sun under blue skies and 15.9 degrees, as weatherman Dave Wheeler tweeted during the afternoon.

The forecast for Thursday is similar, but with more high cloud and slightly lower temperatures.

Many thanks to all our readers who responded to our Facebook appeal and sent in their pictures of the day.

Interestingly, we got a phenomenal amount of photos of the Bibby Challenge being towed into Scalloway Harbour. As if it needed any further proof, this clearly is a seafaring community.
