Letters / Calculator broken after all
Please allow me to respond to Lee Goodlad’s calculations (Embraced by majority, SN, 21 May 13).
2,736 objections were submitted to the Energy Consent Unit and 1,114 expressions of support – a clear majority against the project.
Shetland Island Council organised a string of consultative meetings in relation to the wind farm. At each one (show of hands) there was a clear majority against, averaging 75 per cent opposition to the project.
The Shetland Times carried out a poll amongst its readers which showed a clear majority against the wind farm.
In a second poll, using a different sample, a small majority was in favour of the wind farm.
After adding up both polls and dividing the results by two, as is correct demoscopic practice, there was still a majority (albeit reduced) against the wind farm.
In the Shetland context Sustainable Shetland’s membership of over 800 (and growing) is something to be proud of and reflects just how strongly the population feels about the proposed VE wind farm.
I wouldn’t be surprised to find out that SuS is one of, if not the largest community organisation ever to exist in Shetland.
Perhaps Lee Goodlad’s calculator is broken after all?
