News / Skate park setback

The indicative design submitted by Shetland Skatepark Association to the council's planning department.

PLANS to build a £170,000 skate park near the coastguard station at The Knab, in Lerwick, suffered an unexpected setback on Tuesday when planners decided they wanted more information before giving the green light for the development to go ahead.

The Shetland Skatepark Association had high hopes to press ahead with their plans as soon as possible after successfully raising funds from Shetland Islands Councils and the LEADER programme.

But councillors decided by five votes to two that they wanted to see more detailed information in the actual design and lay-out plan of the development before following their official’s recommendation to grant planning permission.

Former chairman of the association James Stewart said: “We’re disappointed that the decision has been deferred. I am especially disappointed for our members who are forced to wait again and again for the skate park. We remain determined to get a skate park in Shetland.

“We have yet to speak to the Shetland Islands Council to see what further information they need so we can get them the information that they require and press ahead.”
