News / Lifeboat launched
THE LERWICK lifeboat was called out to meet the Fraserburgh fishing boat Sunrise (FR 359) on Tuesday morning after they called the coastguard about an injured crewman.
Shetland coastguard received the call at 5.40am, and put the fishing crew in touch with a doctor at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary to assess his condition.
The doctor deemed the man’s injuries were not serious enough to warrant the coastguard helicopter being scrambled, so the Sunrise crew requested the lifeboat come and meet them instead.
The Lerwick lifeboat was launched at 8.30am and met the Sunrise an hour later, after the fishing boat had steamed from its earlier position 60 miles south of Sumburgh Head.
A coastguard spokeswoman said the injured man was transferred to the lifeboat and taken back to Lerwick from where he was conveyed to Gilbert Bain Hospital.
