News / Busy Saturday for fire crews
A LARGE polytunnel and a 26ft boat were completely destroyed by fire in Girlsta, on Saturday afternoon.
Fire crews from Lerwick and Scalloway were alerted to the blaze at just after half past three.
They had to use six sets of breathing apparatus and two hose reel jets to extinguish the blaze.
A spokeswoman said that the fibreglass boat had been kept in the 16 metre by 6 metre polytunnel.
Two hours later, crews from Bixter, Walls and Lerwick were called to a fire on a roof in a dwelling house in Sandness.
The fire was already extinguished on arrival, and damage was confined to a small roof area. However, the building also sustained some water damage to the roof space and a bathroom on the first floor.
