News / Hopes for weekend Mareel opening dashed

HARDCORE dance fans face disappointment after plans to open Shetland’s new cinema and music venue Mareel on Saturday night with DJ Kutski fell through at the last minute.

Shetland Arts director Gwilym Gibbons said that hopes of having completion certificates issued for the £12 million building on Wednesday were dashed when it emerged some final details had to be resolved.

However he said he was still hopeful that a concert by US singer songwriter Devon Sproule would go ahead on Tuesday as the first event to be staged at waterfront building.

“We really are in the last stages of getting various bits of documentation and a small number of snagging items resolved,” Gibbons said.

“We were hoping it would happen in time for Saturday, but it’s clear that the number of things that need to be resolved between now and then mean that it won’t happen. At this point we are absolutely working towards being open on Tuesday.

“It is immensely frustrating to be losing what would have been a fantastic event in Mareel, but we can be sure there will be many other fantastic opportunities when we are eventually up and running.”

The DJ Kutski event has been switched to the Hamnavoe public hall, with anyone wishing a refund being advised to take their ticket back to where they bought it.
