News / No reprieve on ETV cover yet
ISLES MP Alistair Carmichael has clarified the state of last minute talks on the future of the emergency towing vessel (ETV) stationed in Shetland and Orkney waters.
Speculation is high that a six month reprieve had been secured, but the coalition government’s deputy chief whip said that was not yet the case.
Negotiations are ongoing to save the tugs from government cuts following a huge outcry from seafaring communities.
The ETV stationed in the Minches has been given a six month reprieve, but the northern isles tug is due to be withdrawn at the end of September.
Last weekend the tug Anglian Earl towed the Norwegian freighter Fenja to safety after it broke down 50 miles north of Unst.
“I am still in discussions with ministers in the Treasury and the Department of Transport to ensure that we have provision for emergency towing vessels in the northern isles,” Mr carmichael said.
“There are a number of options which are in play at the moment. There is nothing certain while there is a lot of talk in the public domain about a six month extension. Even that is yet not guaranteed.
“There is a lot still to play for here, and I am actively engaged in ensuring that we do have cover, which I believe we need.”
