News / Football: Thistle’s first trophy in six years
SATURDAY saw Thistle beat Whalsay to win the Fraser Cup final after a penalty shoot out.
Thistle won 5-4 on penalties after the game had finished 3-3 in what was described as one of the best local finals in recent years.
Whalsay took the lead through Alistair Johnson but soon found themselves level when Stuart Smith equalised after being put through on goal.
Thistle took the lead in the second half when Garry Teale headed in at the back post, but Erik Thomson converted a penalty to make it 2-2.
Another Unst man, Neil Laurenson then did the same for Thistle to make it 3-2 but in the dying minutes, Thomson scored his second to make it three all and extra time.
A pulsating 30 minutes followed, but with no team being able to get a winner.
Ryan Leask was Thistle’s hero in goals as he saved in sudden death to make it 5-4 on penalties and to give Thistle their first trophy since the County Shield win in 2005.
Friday’s league game between Delting and Spurs was postponed.
