News / Jailed for drunkenly reversing into pensioner
A MAN from Perthshire who drunkenly reversed twice into a Shetland pensioner was sent to prison for more than two years Lerwick Sheriff Court on Wednesday.
Roy McLuckie, of Affric Avenue, Scone, was also banned from the roads for six years and was told that he needs to sit the extended driving test should he want to obtain a driving licence again.
Disqualified from driving at the time, the 27 year old struck his 70 year old victim twice – breaking five of his ribs – after getting into his works van while three times the limit on 8 October.
The court had heard previously how McLuckie had reversed at excessive speed and struck the pensioner, knocking him to the ground, in the lower car park of the Shetland Hotel.
After halting briefly, McLuckie reversed again, thereby driving over the man, who was still prone on the ground.
Sheriff Ian Cruickshank told McLuckie that his actions were “reckless in the extreme” and that it was only “by good fortune” that the accident had not resulted in a fatality.
He said the case was made even worse due to the fact that McLuckie had a previous conviction for drink driving and was serving a three-year driving ban when getting behind the wheel on 8 October.
The sheriff said there was no alternative to prison and jailed him for two years and two months.
