Reviews / Lindsay Lou hits the heights at Mareel
A SELL-OUT crowd enjoyed a beguiling night of Americana from Michigan songstress Lindsay Lou and her band at Mareel on Sunday night.
Shorn of the “Flatbellys” moniker they performed under at the 2015 Shetland Folk Festival, the instrument-swapping group performed a host of material from their brand new album Southland and its predecessor Ionia.
It was the fifth and final Scottish date on their UK tour, before the band head down under for a fortnight-long Australian tour next month.
The band’s sound has evolved somewhat following the departure of multi-instrumentalist Mark Lavengood and the addition of Californian drummer Wilson, and the capacity audience eagerly lapped up their indie/bluegrass material, harmonies and, of course, Lindsay Lou’s soulful vocal prowess.
Earlier in the evening local favourites Vair – fresh from a headline show at Celtic Connections earlier this month – turned in an excellent 45-minute performance full of powerful musical interplay and witty bonhomie.
