News / Salmon worker keeps licence
A SALMON farm manager from Burra who drove his pick-up at 66mph when the speed limit was 40mph has been given six penalty points and a £500 fine.
Forty six year old Marshall Thomason, of Bridgend, previously admitted driving at the speed on the B9074 at East Voe, Scalloway on 26 July.
Procurator fiscal Duncan Mackenzie said the incident occurred at around 5.30pm.
Defence agent Tommy Allan said his client had travelled the road numerous times before driving to work at a salmon farm in Vidlin.
“Familiarity breeds maybe not contempt, but a lack of attention,” he said.
The solicitor said not having a licence would make Thomason’s job “extremely difficult to carry out” due to the location and him being on call.
Sheriff Philip Mann decided against disqualification because of the effect it would have on Thomason’s employment and family.
“This was a speed that was not permitted even if you’d been outwith the restricted area,” he noted.
