News / New York Viking invasion
THE LERWICK jarl squad is preparing to take part in this year’s Tartan Day celebrations in New York.
Over 24 members of the Viking squad will hit the Big Apple on Saturday to take part in the Scottish-themed parade on Sixth Avenue.
The day forms part of Scotland Week, which celebrates the role Scottish-Americans have played in America.
Their journey began this week aboard the NorthLink ferry on the trip to Aberdeen, with the squad, led by guizer jarl Mark Evans, wearing full Viking regalia.
Serco NorthLink managing director Stuart Garrett met the warriors as they began their trip south in full Viking regalia.
“We are extremely pleased to be able to help the jarl squad on their journey to New York and export a bit of Shetland to America,” he said, adding that he expected the New Yorkers to be “wowed”.
Guizer Jarl Mark Evans described heading to New York for Tartan Day as a “great opportunity”.
