Business / Licensing extension approved for whisky distillery
COUNCILLORS have approved extended alcohol licensing hours for the Lerwick Distillery for whisky tasting and off sales.
The extension will allow the whisky distillery to offer private tasting sessions between 7pm and 9pm. Previously the hours ran to 7pm.
The Shetland Islands area licensing board approved the extension at a short meeting on Monday morning.
The distillery building, on Lerwick’s Market Street, is now open, but at the moment operations are restricted to the shop area – which currently sells bottles of whisky produced from casks from south.
The longer-term plan is to create a locally made single malt whisky on site, while there will be a tasting room too.
At Monday’s meeting – which lasted no more than three minutes – there were no questions and no objections from councillors.
Shetland South member Bryan Peterson said it was a “sensible” proposal and added that “as far as I can see it’s totally within the lines of the legislation”.
Catherine Hughson, who represents Shetland Central, said it is “good to see a business beginning to thrive” in the town.
