Sport / Shetland produce stunning comeback to lift District Cup for second time

SHETLAND’s women’s hockey team incredibly came back from 2-0 down to lift the Scottish District Cup for a second time in three years on Sunday.

Running penalties were needed to decide the final in Glasgow after the blues pulled themselves off the canvas to score twice through Rhea Nicolson and Megan Hibbert and level the game at 2-2.

And Edinburgh again looked set to lift the trophy there, with Shetland missing their first two penalties to give their opponents a huge advantage.

However Edinburgh then missed their next three penalties – with Shetland scoring all of theirs – to seal a 3-1 penalty victory and spark huge celebrations.

Keeper Megan Nicholson again played a huge part in the running penalties, keeping Edinburgh at bay and turning the tide in Shetland’s favour.

It is Shetland’s second success in the competition in the last three years, after a similar win on penalties in 2023.
