Community / Sharon set for biggest challenge yet as she gets on her bike for cancer charity
A CHARITY fundraiser and former cancer patient behind a hugely popular swapshop event is set to take on her toughest challenge yet.
Sharon Deyell will aim to raise funds for Clan Cancer Support by tackling the 37-mile long Tour de 4 in Glasgow on 7 September 2025.
The event starts and finishes at the Sir Chris Hoy velodrome and has been organised by the seven-time Olympic medallist himself following his own stage four cancer diagnosis.
The inaugural event encourages everyone affected by cancer, whether directly or indirectly, to come together and ride for a cause that matters.
Sharon was diagnosed with breast cancer after turning 50 in 2022, following a visit from the mobile screening unit to Shetland.
She has raised tens of thousands of pounds for cancer charities through her popular swapshop events, which returned in January and raised £6,500.
That was her 14th swapshop to date – with over £60,000 now raised in that time.
A keen cyclist, her and husband Colin will both tackle the Tour de 4 blue course later this year, with Colin raising money for Pancreatic Cancer UK.
She said Clan had provided “invaluable support” during her treatment, “especially while staying at Clan Haven in Aberdeen” for radiotherapy.
“Clan Cancer Support does incredible work, especially for folk from Shetland, Orkney, and across the north east of Scotland,” Sharon said.
“We’re lucky to have a Clan service right here in Shetland, offering support to anybody affected by cancer – providing care, guidance, and a listening ear when it’s needed most.”
GoFundMe has backed her campaign, and said Sharon and Colin were now in training for their big challenge.
“Sharon, who works part-time for Shetland Community Connections, a local third-sector organization that supports the community, is using this fundraiser to pay back the organisation that she feels saved her life – the Clan Cancer Support,” it added.
