Council / Viking road damage compensation figure of £400k only an ‘initial estimate’
EARLY estimates have suggested that Shetland Islands Council could receive £400,000 from SSE Renewables for road repairs following the construction of the Viking Energy wind farm.
However, a spokesperson for Shetland Islands Council (SIC) said it was too early to say what the final figure will be.
The £400,000 figure was included in the SIC’s budget for 2025/26.
It relates to a ‘section 96’ planning agreement where the developer of the 103-turbine wind farm in Shetland’s central mainland pays for maintenance required to public roads after construction.
Although the wind farm is now operational, there is technically still some construction work ongoing.
A spokesperson for the SIC said: “The figure included in the budget and charging proposals was an initial estimate – it is too early to say what the final figure for any road damage compensation will be.
“The site works for Viking are nearing conclusion so this figure will be finalised over the summer months.”
A spokesperson from SSE Renewables added: “Through SSE Renewables’ S96 planning agreement with Shetland Islands Council, we have an agreement to provide funding in support of any agreed road repairs that may be required following the completion of construction at Viking wind farm, which is standard industry practice.
“As there are still some construction activities ongoing on site, a final figure for any required road repairs will be formally agreed with Shetland Islands Council when construction completes later this year.”
Construction on the wind farm began in 2020, with the wind farm becoming operational last year.
