Health / Marie nominated for national nursing award
A LOCAL woman who has “dedicated her career to improving cardiovascular care in remote and rural settings” has been nominated in the RCN Scotland Nurse of the Year Awards.
NHS Shetland’s cardiac nurse specialist Marie Hurson is up for the clinical leadership prize at the national awards.
She said: “I am deeply honoured to be nominated for this award and the recognition it represents for cardiac nursing in making a significant difference to service delivery and for patient-centred care across the remote and rural healthcare setting of NHS Shetland.”
The Royal College of Nursing’s (RCN) website says: “As a single-handed practitioner for many years, she played a pivotal role in developing and expanding cardiac nursing pathways, ensuring equitable access to high-quality care for Shetland residents.
“Marie is praised for establishing and delivering essential cardiac services such as the cardiac nurse referral and heart failure pathways, cardiac rehabilitation, and remote monitoring for heart failure patients.
“Marie’s leadership has significantly improved patient outcomes, reduced healthcare inequalities, and established Shetland as a model for delivering specialist cardiac care in remote regions.
“Her work is described as exemplifying clinical excellence, innovation, and dedication to person-centred care.
“Marie is committed to advancing professional development by supporting student placements, supervising trainees, and contributing to national research on cardiac care.”
NHS Shetland’s director of nursing and acute services Prof Kathleen Carolan said: “We are incredibly proud of Marie, who is a role model for nursing leadership.
“Marie is very highly regarded by her patients and colleagues and it is fantastic to see her clinical leadership being recognised by her peers and the RCN through the Scotland Nurse of the Year Awards for all the work she has done to improve care for people with cardiovascular conditions in Shetland.”
Winners of the various categories of the RCN Scotland Nurse of the Year Awards will be announced on 12 June.
The awards are designed to “shine a light on excellence in Scottish nursing, acknowledging, highlighting, and celebrating the unwavering commitment and exceptional professional care provided by our nursing staff”.
