Sport / Sporting round up 8 April
THE SHETLAND men’s hockey team came agonisingly close to a first ever national cup final on Saturday.
The side went into the semi-final clash with Clydesdale 3s looking to make the last two of the Scottish Reserve Plate later this month.
Both sides were locked together at 1-1 at the end of the match after Josh MacColl’s goal for Shetland in Aberdeen.
That meant that running penalties were required to decide who would head through to the final, and it was Clydesdale 3s who secured the 3-2 victory with the final penalty.
Shetland’s ladies made it to a third successive Scottish District Cup final with a 4-1 win over Glasgow Accies on Sunday morning to ensure the isles will have one representative in a cup final in late April.
TWO SHETLAND records fell in the swimming pools of Aberdeen over the weekend at the Scottish National Age Group championships.
Caoilinn Robinson took 23 seconds off her own 1,500m freestyle record for the 17 and over category before Julian Okroj set a new 100m backstroke record in the 13/14 age group.
Okroj went on to earn the gold medal in the final of that race, before winning silver in the 400m freestyle event to cap off a great weekend.
SHETLAND’S men’s volleyball side rounded off their season with two victories against sides from the capital.
Edinburgh University 2s and Edinburgh Jets ventured north on Saturday to meet Shetland at the West Mainland Leisure Centre in Aith.
The blues made light work of the university team in their first fixture, beating them 25-18, 25-17, 25-18 for a three set victory.
Jets were to prove more formidable competition, despite Shetland getting off to the perfect start with a 25-18 win in set one.
Jets soon levelled the game by sneaking set two 25-23, and then won an epic third set 30-28 to move one away from victory.

However Shetland fought back to again win 25-18 in set four, taking the match to a deciding set.
A 15-10 result in that decider meant Shetland close out the league campaign with two final victories.
THE MEN’S rugby team made it two wins from two at their temporary Gilbertson Park home with a comprehensive victory over Deeside on Saturday.
The side beat the same opponents 63-24 just a week earlier, and this time welcomed them to Shetland for the second part of their league double header.
It was a change in location but no change in the outcome, with Shetland this time overcoming Deeside 48-12. Shetland’s Craig Mann was named player of the match.
Shetland will next host unbeaten league leaders Gordonians 2nd in the league on Saturday.
TEENAGE footballer George Robesten took on Aberdeen in the Scottish Premiership on Saturday, but was unable to prevent his side Ross County from falling to defeat.
A solitary goal from Aberdeen’s Shayden Morris settled the tie, with Robesten on for the final 30 minutes.
The loss leaves County looking anxiously over their shoulders, with wins for the bottom two Dundee and St Johnstone closing the gap on the Staggies.
They remain a point ahead of the relegation play-off place, with a final pre-split tie against St Mirren this weekend before they face the rest of the bottom six again.
