Marine / Total value of new fishing trawler orders nearly £100m, shipyard says
THE DANISH shipyard set to build two new pelagic trawlers for Shetland-based companies says the total value of the two orders comes to nearly £100 million.
Karstenens, which is based in Skagen, also said the new Serene and Antares have been designed to provide fish with a “minimal carbon footprint” and will be futureproofed to adapt for “green transitions”.
A new Serene, which would be 85 metres long, could be delivered at the end of 2027, and a 78.5 metre Antares could follow in March 2028.
In a statement released on Thursday, Karstenens said the total value of these investments is close to £100 million.
Both the existing Antares and Serene – delivered to Shetland in 2016 and 2018 respectively – would be sold on by their owners.
The shipyard said the two new contracts “emphasise a strong commitment to the fishing industry by forward thinking Whalsay fishermen”.
“Both vessels have been specially designed to provide human consumption fish with a minimal carbon footprint,” it added.
“All modern technologies are taken into account, and the vessels have been designed to be future proof to adapt for available green transitions.”
Karstensens said it is “extremely happy and proud” of the new contracts.
It added that the design, specification and arrangements of the vessels have resulted from “extensive and close cooperation” between the owners and the yard.
“The focus has been on optimising catch quality and hygiene, to allow the new Serene and Antares to land first class quality pelagic fish,” the shipyard added.
“Working environment, safety and comfort for the crew has also been major focus points during design works.”
