Sport / Sporting round up 1 April
SHETLAND’s men’s rugby team romped to a convincing away victory over Deeside at the weekend.
After a three week break from action, the team travelled south looking to return to winning ways after a draw with Aberdeen University Medics last time out.
And they did so in some style, thrashing Deeside 63-24 to seal a superb away day win.
Fourth-placed Shetland still have five league games to play before their season ends, and will be looking to overhaul the teams above them.
CONNOR Lesley has won Shetland’s first boccia medal at national level with a third-place finish in Glasgow.
Lesley was one of three Shetland boccia players taking part in the Scottish Disability Sport national schools’ championship at Scotstoun Leisure Centre last week.
His bronze medal came in the athletes with a learning disability section, with Scottish Disability Sport congratulating Lesley – and all the medal winners – for their superb performances.
Shetland will enter a national learning disability sport competition for the first time this summer, with a boccia team one of those heading to Stirling.
Around 750 athletes are expected to descend on Stirling for the games, along with more than 350 coaches, volunteers and officials from across the country.
The event runs from Friday 25 to Sunday 27 July.
TWO Shetlanders are set to play their part in football’s North Caledonian Cup final after a man-of-the-match performance and clean sheet to earn their place there.
Lewis Harkness hit a hat-trick and keeper Henry Oldbury kept a clean sheet as Golspie Sutherland thrashed Inverness Athletic 8-0 in Saturday’s cup semi-final.

They will meet North Caledonian league champions Invergordon in the final, with the pair looking to lift a maiden piece of silverware with Golspie.
Meanwhile George Robesten was a second-half substitute for Ross County against Dundee United on Sunday, but was unable to prevent them from falling to a 1-0 defeat.
Robesten was brought on for the final 15 minutes, just after Ross Graham had given the away side the lead at the Global Energy Stadium.
County now face an uphill battle to secure a top six place in the Scottish Premiership, trailing sixth-placed Hearts by four points with just two games to play before the split.
They remain four points clear of 11th-placed Dundee, who occupy the relegation play-off space.
FOOTBALL clubs from the isles have discovered their fates for this year’s Highland Amateur Cup, with nine clubs from Shetland putting themselves forward.
Newly formed Southside Impact face a stern test against Fraser Cup holders Whitedale in the preliminary round, while Ness United will make the long trek from the South Mainland to take on North Isles.
Town rivals Thistle and Spurs will meet in the final preliminary tie on Saturday 19 April.
The winners of that game will then host North Isles or Ness on 10 May, with Whitedale or Southside Impact welcoming Scalloway.
Whalsay will host Banks in the final first round fixture.
In the first cup competition of the Shetland outdoor season Thistle caused a shock with a 3-2 win over Celtic last week to make it through the semi-finals of the Highland Fuels Cup.
However Whalsay proved a step too far for Thistle in last night’s (Monday) semi-final, with the hosts the 3-2 victors this time.
A brace from Calvin Leask was not enough for the Jags, with a double from Ethan Rathore and one from Robbie Sandison enough to see Whalsay through to the final.
Whalsay are out to end a 10-year wait to lift the trophy, which is played for in the Bonnie Isle every year.
Ness are due to face Whitedale tonight in the competition’s other semi-final, with Whitedale the current holders.
TWELVE bowlers entered the Jamieson pairs competition on Sunday afternoon.
At the end of the round robin stage Allan Bruce and Rosie Jamieson went through to join Tam Terris and Gibbie Pottinger in the final.
Bruce and Jamieson picked up a single shot on the first end of the seven-end match, but it all went downhill from there with Terris and Pottinger running out 10-1 winners.
Rosie Jamieson presented Terris and Pottinger with the Jamieson Trophy at the end of the action at the Clickimin bowls hall over the weekend.
