SHETLAND Islands Council is warning maintenance will take place at the end of May and early June on the linkspans at West Burrafirth and Papa Stour ferry terminals, which will affect vehicle access.

There will be no vehicle access to the Papa Stour ferry at West Burrafirth ferry terminal on Wednesday 28 May, or at the Papa Stour ferry terminal on Wednesday 4 June.

The service will operate for foot passengers only, using a gangway from the ferry to the shore.

The council also said that passengers should be aware that the gangway and stairs on board the vessel can be steep.

The maintenance involves major structural work which will require the linkspans to be taken out of use.

The linkspan will be removed after the last sailings on the previous Monday and will be replaced in time for the next sailings on Friday morning.

Vehicle access to the Papa Stour ferry will not be possible between these times.

Passengers are advised there will be restricted space at the Papa Stour and West Burrafirth ferry terminals while these works are taking place.

Ferry sailings on the Papa Stour route are for bookings only, by contacting the ferries booking office on 01595 745804 during opening hours.

This is the latest in a series of scheduled works on linkspans across the council’s ferry network, with work already completed on ferry terminals at Skerries, Vidlin, Laxo, Symbister, Gutcher, Belmont, Bressay and Lerwick.

Shetland Islands Council said it apologises for any inconvenience to passengers caused by these essential works.
