SHETLAND claimed the B badminton inter-county title with a win over rivals Orkney at the weekend.

However the A side could not complete a famous home double, with the reds running out 16-10 winners in that fixture.

The blues made a fine start to the B county in the level doubles, winning four of the first six matches to lead the game 4-2.

Honours were even over the next four doubles matches, keeping Shetland ahead 6-4.

Heading into the mixed doubles Shetland were now ahead 7-5, but they put their foot down to win the next four matches and earn an unassailable 11-5 lead.

Orkney won the final two mixed doubles to end the B county, making the final score 11-7 to Shetland.

It was roles reversed in the level doubles of the A inter-county, with Orkney racing into a 4-2 lead.

However Shetland roared back and were soon level at 5-5 heading into the first and second men’s and ladies singles games.

The reds were utterly dominant in these though, winning all four to make it 9-5 to Orkney.

It was 13-7 Orkney after the first six mixed doubles matches, which meant Shetland had to win the final six mixed doubles games to earn a draw.

The last six results were shared, however, and Orkney won the trophy with a 16-10 victory.

Shetland Badminton Association gave a special thanks to Orkney for travelling up and for “providing such a high standard of games throughout the day”.

HOLDERS Whitedale are the first team through to the semi-finals of this year’s Highland Fuels Cup after a thumping 5-1 win over Scalloway on Monday.

A hat-trick from Greg Tulloch set the West Side team on their way in Whalsay, with further finishes from Jack McShane and Mattie Isbister sealing safe passage.

Bobby Robertson responded for Scalloway.

Next up for Whitedale is a meeting with Ness United, who received a bye in the competition, in the last four.

Hosts Whalsay welcome Lerwick Spurs to Harbison Park tonight (Tuesday) for their quarter-final clash, before town rivals Thistle and Celtic meet on Wednesday.

The winners of those two ties will meet in the second semi-final.

IT WAS a great few days for Whitedale, after their Parish Cup side beat Orkney’s Parish champions Holm to claim the Inter-Parish Cup.

A solitary goal from Gary Scott was enough to settle the tie, which Whitedale contested after thrashing Sandwick 5-1 in last year’s Parish Cup final.

It was Whitedale’s first Parish Cup triumph since 1995, and gave them the opportunity to travel down to Orkney to take on Holm.

Whitedale rode their luck in the second half to match to hold off their Orcadian opponents, and added the Inter-Parish Cup to their trophy cabinet.

SHETLAND’S netballers will also head to Orkney this weekend for the annual inter-county clash with their island rivals.

The blues are the holders of both titles, having won the A match 45-40 at the Clickimin last year.

A 45-36 win in the B fixture gave Shetland a famous home double last year.

They will look to retain the trophies when they reach Orkney on Saturday, with the B match kicking off the action at 11am.

The A match will then follow at 1.15pm.

BOTH the Shetland men’s and women’s hockey teams will also be in action this weekend.

The women’s side head south for their Scottish District Cup quarter-final tie, while the men’s team are also in the last eight of the reserve plate.

The fixtures will be played on the mainland across the weekend.
