Sport / From toe to tip – ultramarathon race to take runners from Sumburgh to Unst
EVER fancied running all the way from Sumburgh to Unst? A new ultramarathon challenge will give you the chance to do just that over the course of three days.
The Shetland Toe to Tip race is the brainchild of adventure trail company Rat Race, which creates challenges designed to test runners and hikers while allowing them to see the world.
Its most recent races include a five-day trek through the Arctic Circle, an ultramarathon through the Borneo jungle and a “Crater to Canyon” challenge taking runners to the edge of Arizona’s Grand Canyon.
They will turn their attention to Shetland next year for their first marathon quest set in the isles – a 160km endurance test from the South Mainland all the way to the top of Unst.
The company said its three-day, 100-mile challenge would be “spectacular” for all that took part.
“Shetland’s small footprint is crammed full of wild wonders and dramatic landscapes,” it said.
“What better way to discover the abundance of beautiful beaches, breathtaking coastline cliff top trails and stunning wildlife than on your own two feet.
“Keep your eyes peeled through our three-day ultramarathon for the world-famous Shetland ponies, orcas, puffins, whales and dolphins.”
The race runs from 4-6 September 2026, with runners setting off from Sumburgh after arriving off the NorthLink ferry from Aberdeen that same morning.
They will travel 56km – almost 35 miles – and reach 700m of elevation on the first day alone, as they experience sights such as Sumburgh Head, the lighthouse and St. Ninian’s Isle.
On day two runners will “explore the wild and unspoilt section” from Scalloway to Whiteness – including running among the “enormous wind turbines on Mid Kame”.
After ticking off a further 52km the group will head to Yell and Unst on the final day, pushing through a final 53km to end the challenge at Skaw Beach in Unst.

Rat Race has said runners will be allowed to go at their own pace, and will have 12 hours to reach their destination on each day.
The company added it had held a pilot event to test the route late last year, with one runner awarding the event five stars and saying: “If I could give it more stars, I would”.
The cost of the event is £1,950, which includes ferry travel to and from Shetland, accommodation in the isles and evening meals.
