Energy / Public meeting to discuss harms of wind turbine noise
A PUBLIC meeting to discuss wind turbines, noise and associated health impacts will be held in the Tingwall Hall early next month.
Hosted by Westside resident Dr Sally Huband and chaired by Frank Hay of campaign group Sustainable Shetland, the meeting will explore if it is true that “what you cannot hear, cannot harm you”.
The event comes on the back of a substantial article Dr Huband wrote on the topic using her own experience with the Viking wind farm, and which was published in Shetland News in February.
For the Tingwall meeting, she has invited two guest speakers who have been working on the impact of noise and acoustic injury for many years.
Environmental scientist Dr Lynette Robertson will present a brief summary of the International Acoustic Research Organisation’s ACHE citizen science initiative, and the acoustic monitoring equipment she has been using in Shetland. Melvin Grosvenor of Grosvenor Consultancy meanwhile is a highly experienced lay advocate who has been representing residents and community groups for over a decade.
He is a founder member of the Independent Noise Working Group (INWG) which aims to ensure that the acoustic impacts from wind turbines are properly controlled to protect public health and wellbeing.
He will explain why, from his experience, the current regulatory framework is failing to protect human from turbine emissions.
The meeting will be held on Thursday 3 April, starting at 7.30pm, with all welcome.
