Transport / Councillor’s welcome for proposal to reduce Ladies Drive speed limit to 40mph

A PROPOSAL to decrease the speed limit between the junction with the A970 at the north exit of Lerwick and the Hoofields area from 60mph to 40mph has been welcomed by a local councillor.

Lerwick North and Bressay councillor Gary Robinson previously expressed concern at the speed of vehicles entering the resedential area of Lerwick near Hoofields, where at the moment the limit abruptly goes from 60pmh to 30mph.

But Shetland Islands Council has proposed that the limit now be 40mph on Ladies Drive from the junction with the main A970 road, to just before the turn-off to the marts.

It would then reduce to 30mph as drivers head down the old North Road into the residential area.

Robinson said: “Tapering the speed limit beyond the current 30mph limit adjacent to the Hoofields junction should help to improve safety at the increasingly busy junction that serves not just Hoofields, but several recent or new developments on the Staney Hill.

“It follows speed monitoring that was carried out by the roads department in response to concerns that were raised with me about the speed of some vehicles travelling past the 30mph sign, right down past the Norstane and Voderview junction.”

People have until 4pm on 25 March to respond to a Shetland Islands Council consultation on the proposed changes.
