DAY three of the Shetland Youth Music Festival kicked off with 20 young string players performing solos and in ensembles at Mareel on Wednesday morning.
The audience enjoyed a mixture of violin, viola, cellos and double basses playing a wide variety of music from 16th century composer Susato to the lyrical beauty of A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square.
Festival adjudicator Anne MacDonald commented on the high quality technique and skill and the expert sense of ensemble with their accompanist.
As a violinist she offered some great advice on use of the bow.
The afternoon began with pupils performing on woodwind instruments in solos and in groups showcasing saxophones, flutes and clarinets.
There was a wide choice of music and styles – the Muppets theme tune being a particular highlight from the saxophone quartet.
The second half of the session was the open section, a mix of solos and duets using different instrumental combinations including flute and vocals with guitar and mandolins.
There was some incredible teamwork on display and it was impressive how well the performers listened to each other.
Tonight is the Young Musician of the Year competition in the Mareel auditorium, with tickets selling fast.
The gala concert, also at Mareel, is tomorrow night (Thursday 20 March) at 7pm and will feature acts from across the festival week.
