News / Construction starts on Brae energy hub as appeal for directors made
LOCAL contractor RG Construction has been appointed to lead the renovation of the Brae Youth and Community Centre into a rural energy hub for the North Mainland.
Work has already begun at the site in a “significant milestone” for the project, which will see insulation, new heating and solar and batteries installed to create a warm, energy efficient facility for the community.
The refurbished building will improve the existing facilities and add co-working spaces, an information centre for energy efficiency, electric vehicle charging stations, a community café and facilities for a car club and e-bike rentals.
The renovation is expected to be completed in August, with the community groups who met in the youth centre set to return once it reopens.
Shetland Islands Council has also commissioned a feasibility study to see if a district heating scheme, potentially powered by a wind turbine, could be used to heat homes in Brae.
The news comes as the Brae Rural Energy Hub Community Interest Company (CIC) kicks off a search for directors to join its board, offering residents a unique opportunity to shape its future.
People interested in learning more about the hub or in becoming a director are encouraged to come along to an informal information session on Thursday 27 March at the Brae Hall from 7pm.
The Brae energy hub is a first for Shetland and forms part of a larger rural energy hubs project, funded by Innovate UK’s £25 million Net Zero Living Programme.
Local voices are being sought to lead the community board of the CIC, with new directors actively being encouraged.
“The opportunity to join the board of the Brae Rural Energy Hub is a chance to make a real impact in our community,” said Ellie Ratter, a current director of the hub.

“We are looking for individuals to join our board who are passionate about working with Shetland residents and businesses to reduce carbon emissions and energy costs.
“With the right leadership, we will create a warm, welcoming space that canbenefit everyone in Shetland.”
Directors would have to give an estimated time commitment of four hours per month, including a monthly board meeting.
As the project progresses the team, including engagement and development officer Jade Wilson, will be engaging with residents, businesses and community groups to shape services and initiatives that benefit the community.
RG Construction managing director Robbie Gray said his company was “excited to be part of this transformative initiative”.
“Our team and valued sub-contractors are committed to delivering a high-quality renovation that will serve as a cornerstone for Shetland’s journey to net zero”.
