Education / SIC seeking views on use of phones in schools

SHETLAND Islands Council (SIC) is consulting on the use of mobile phones in local schools, with a survey link being sent by email to parents/carers, teachers and pupils.

The engagement with key stakeholders aims to gather a wide range of perspectives on this topic and will also include in-person discussions with young people.

Evidence will also be gathered from other local authorities, schools and published research.

The council said it is hoped to create balanced and effective guidance for the use of mobile phones in schools, which supports educational outcomes and promotes the health, safety and well-being of children, young people and staff.

It comes after a petition was launched last year calling on mobile phones to be banned during the school day at the Anderson High School in Lerwick.

Councillor Davie Sandison, who chairs the SIC’s education and families committee, said “The use of mobile phones in schools is a significant topic that impacts the daily lives of our children, young people and staff.

“It is essential that we balance the views of all members of our school communities, alongside emerging research in this area, to develop guidance that is fair, practical and beneficial for everyone.

“I’d encourage everyone with an interest in this issue to share their views through this consultation.”

More information on the survey can be found here and those who have received links to the online survey are asked to respond before 5pm on Sunday 30 March.
