SHETLAND Islands Council is now seeking a contractor for architectural services for the proposed refurbishment of the former Janet Courtney Hostel at the old Anderson High School site in Lerwick.

Turning the former hostel into flats has been targeted as the first phase of the redevelopment of the former school site.

It was previously suggested that work could commence on site in January 2026.

The group is one of seven which will feature at the National Theatre’s prestigious Connections Festival when it comes to the Pitlochry Festival Theatre between 10-12 April.

The day also provided an opportunity to raise awareness of the Quit Your Way Scotland programme which is delivered across the isles by the NHS Shetland health improvement team.

NHS Shetland said smoking is the leading cause of premature, preventable death.

It added: “The Quit Your Way programme is delivered by friendly, non-judgmental, and encouraging advisors who are trained in techniques for smoking cessation.

“They are available to work with you to increase and reinforce your motivation and readiness to quit – and be that ear to listen to how smoking fits into your life and why you want to quit.”

Quit Your Way Scotland has a free national helpline on 0800 84 84 84 which can provide advice and support during the week between 9am to 5pm.
