Sport / Sporting round up 10 March

Shetland's ladies hockey team are into the quarter-finals of the Scottish District Cup.

BOTH OF Shetland’s hockey teams produced big results at the weekend to move into the quarter-finals of their respective cup competitions.

The Shetland ladies team moved a step closer to a third Scottish District Cup final in the last three years with a convincing 4-1 win over Stirling University 2’s on Sunday.

Doubles from both Aimee Keith and Rhea Nicolson moved the blues beyond their opponents at Aberdeen Sports Village on Sunday.

They will be back in action on Sunday 30 March for a place in the final four, and will by eyeing the chance to lift the District Cup trophy for a second time in three years.

The men’s hockey team also moved into the last eight of their competition, the Scottish Hockey reserve plate, with a narrow 2-1 victory over Grange 3’s.

Joshua MacColl and Matt Bruce were on the scoresheet to ensure the men joined their female counterparts in celebrating success.

That match also took place in Aberdeen, with both sides enjoying their Sunday in the Granite City and looking eagerly ahead to the next round.

ATHLETE Katie Dinwoodie has broken her own Shetland record in the women’s 60m race – for the third time in just over a month.

Dinwoodie broke the record with a time of 7.96 seconds at the Scottish Universities Indoor Championships in early February, and then broke it again in the final with a new best time of 7.91s.

And the sprinter has now shaved even more time off that record, setting a new Shetland record of 7.89 seconds at a senior indoors event over the weekend.

Shetland Amateur Athletics Club sent their congratulations to Dinwoodie after another record-breaking run.

She is due to represent Shetland once again at this summer’s Island Games in Orkney, having won bronze medals in the 100m and 200m races in Guernsey two years ago.

SWIMMERS from the isles returned from Aberdeen’s latest round of North District age group championships with a string of medals and new best times.

Lerwick Amateur Swimming Club members Oisin Robinson and Lewie Redfern came home with a silver and bronze medal respectively after the weekend’s meet.

Robinson finished second in the 800m freestyle with a 20s personal best, while Redfern was third in the 200m individual medley final.

There were two silver medals for Westside Sharks’ Ruaridh Chittick, first in the 13 and under 100m backstroke and then in the 11-13 age group 50m butterfly race.

He also added a bronze medal in the 13 and under 50m freestyle to cap off a brilliant weekend.

Julian Okroj, representing Delting Dolphins, picked up a silver medal in the 800m freestyle and bronze in both the 100m backstroke and 400m freestyle.

SHETLAND Football Association (SFA) is searching for a new vice-president and minutes secretary ahead of the new footballing season.

The association has appealed for people to come forward and fill the roles following the departures of Stuart Sinclair and Mairi Keith earlier this month.

The SFA said the vice-president would work alongside president Jakob Eunson and the other committee members to achieve the general aims and objectives of the association.

The minutes secretary takes minutes at the monthly SFA meetings and distributes these, and agendas, to the member clubs.

An interest in local football would be desirable, but the SFA said this was “by no means essential”.

“Both positions offer enjoyable and rewarding roles to play within the committee and existing members will help guide you along the way,” it said.

Anyone interested in either role should either message the Shetland Football Association Facebook page or email shetlandfa@yahoo.co.uk.

THERE WAS last-minute joy and heartache for two Shetlanders facing off against each other in the Highland League on Saturday.

Brechin City scored a last-gasp 93rd minute winner against Turriff United to draw level with league leaders Brora Rangers at the summit over the weekend.

Spencer Moreland was an unused substitute for Brechin on Saturday, with former Scalloway forward John Allan brought on for Turriff for the final half hour.

Goalkeeper Henry Oldbury started for Golspie Sutherland at the weekend, but was unable to prevent his side from going down 2-1 to St Duthus in the North Caledonian league.

Golspie have now slipped down to fourth in the league table.

SHETLAND’S men’s rugby team earned a hard-fought draw with Aberdeen Uni Medics on Saturday.

The team made the journey south to face the league’s third side and battled to a creditable 26-26 draw.

Next up for the side is a home fixture against Aberdeen Grammar 2nd on Saturday 22 March at Gilbertson Park.
