Sport / Sporting round-up 24 February
LAYLA Todd continued her fine recent run on the cross-country circuit by picking up a bronze medal at an event in Falkirk over the weekend.
Four isles athletes were taking part in the Scottish national cross-country championships at Callendar Park, with over 2,000 runners involved.
Reeta Moncrieff lined up first in the under-15 girls race, joining 109 runners at the starting line of the 4.3km course.
She ran a really hard race to secure an impressive 35th place finish.
Michelle Sandison and Katie Clubb were up next in the 10km senior women’s race, taking on the hilly course.
Sandison was 20th over the line, with Clubb 47th, out of a line-up of 486 women to both produce brilliant finishes.
Finally Todd was up in the under-20 women’s race, which was run over a 7.6km course.
She battled hard to push to the front of the pack and pushed over the line in third place to add another medal to her recently won Scottish team medal.
Shetland Amateur Athletics Club gave a “huge congratulations” to all four athletes, their families and their coaches for “representing Shetland in such a positive way over the last few months.”
FOOTBALLER Spencer Moreland found the back of the net as his title-chasing Brechin side narrowly saw off bottom club Rothes on Saturday.
Brechin trailed the Highland League’s basement club after a minute, but responded well by scoring three times – one from Moreland – to move 3-1 in front.
However an 88th minute goal from Rothes made for an edgy finish, but Brechin held on to ensure league leaders Brora Rangers remain four points in front having played a game more.
