Community / Plenty on show at ‘bigger than ever’ careers fair
MORE than 80 exhibitors are taking part in the Shetland Careers and Opportunities Fair in Lerwick today (Tuesday).
The event, which gives young folk the chance to hear about career and learning opportunities, is said to be bigger than ever.
It is being organised by Developing the Young Workforce (DYW) Shetland, in partnership with Skills Development Scotland, UHI Shetland, Shetland Local Employability Partnership and the Anderson High School.
The event is being held at the Clickimin Leisure complex until 4pm, in the bowls hall and part of the main hall.
There are over 80 exhibitors attending including local and national employers, universities and the armed forces, and people of all ages are welcome to attend.
Pupils from across Shetland are set to visit throughout the day.
DYW Shetland project manager Nina Hogmo said: “The world of work is constantly changing and having the opportunity to speak directly to employers and universities is vital to understand the variety of pathways and routes into training and employment.
“This provides an excellent chance to speak to these exhibitors, so we encourage everyone to come along.”
Marie Leask, SDS Shetland team leader, added: “We’re absolutely delighted to be part of hosting this event as it provides an excellent opportunity for the people of Shetland to find out about the opportunities that are out there, and the routes to take to reach them.”
Meanwhile UHI Shetland’s head of student experience Kevin Briggs said the event was a “great chance” for the people of Shetland to meet with a range of universities.
“For those looking to enter employment, there will be a wealth of information and stands available so that the community has the chance to find out what is involved in different career pathways,” he added.
Parents and carers are also invited to attend an event in the Anderson High School foyer this evening where representatives from 11 universities will be able to answer any questions.
Information on funding will also be available. The drop-in session will take place from 5pm to 7pm.
