The Shetland 1's and Scotstoun players after their match on Sunday.

THE TWENTY three athletes headed to Orkney to represent Shetland at this summer’s Island Games have been revealed.

More than half of the team will make the short journey to Orkney for their first ever experience at the games.

Katie Dinwoodie, who won bronze in both the women’s 100m and 200m races in Guernsey two years ago, will be back for another tilt at title success.

However Seumas MacKay, who won two silver medals in 2023, is not part of the squad for Orkney.

There are spots for Whalsay distance runner Michelle Sandison and young Layla Todd, who recently won a gold medal representing Scotland under-20 women at a Home Countries cross-challenge event in Leeds.

The full team is as follows: Keira Blance, Katie Clubb, Katie Dinwoodie, Lauren Grains, Sophie Grant, Alina Murray, Mary Rutherford, Michelle Sandison, Jessie Tait, Abbie Taylor, Eva Thompson, Layla Todd, Diana Tulloch, Neil Arthur, Jack Baronet, Russell Gair, Brett Haining, James Irvine, Bobby Laurenson, John Leslie, Dhanni Moar, Kian Redman and Murray Todd.

Shetland Amateur Athletics Club said it was “delighted” to reveal the list of competitors donning the blue vest in July.

“The team is a perfect blend of youth and experience with over half of the Shetland athletes competing in their first games,” it said.

“A huge congratulations to all the athletes and their coaches and I’m sure the next five months will go by in a flash”.

SHETLAND netball 2’s are through to the next round of the Evelyn Beattie Quaich after hitting their stride to beat Inverleith Swifts on Saturday.

However it was the end of the road for the netball 1’s side in the Scottish Cup at the hands of Scotstoun a day later.

The 2’s recovered after a slow start to pull away from their opponents at half-time, with tireless work to win the ball back and strong shooting from Debbie Irvine, Kaitlin Leslie and Erin Spence building up a big lead.

And they would continue to extend that until the final whistle, running out 68-39 winners.

Leslie earned the opposition’s player of the match award, with Aimee Budge earning the plaudits from her own team-mates and Kerry Nicholson selected by her coaches.

On Sunday it was the turn of Shetland 1’s, who faced a stiff test against Scotstoun in Abredeen.

It proved to be a bridge too far for the side, with Scotstoun eventually earning a 66-39 success to progress to the next round of the Scottish Cup.

The winners from the weekend’s Yell badminton open.

RORY Irvine and Amy Sineath were the men’s and women’s winners at the Yell badminton open over the weekend.

Irvine beat Stuart Fraser in the final, with Amy Sineath seeing off Aimee Keith to win the title.

And in the doubles competitions there was more success for the pair, with Irvine teaming up with Gordon Keith to win the men’s doubles trophy.

Amy Sineath teamed up with Kirstin Sineath to seal a second cup of the day.

Liam Flaws and Kylie Wood were the mixed doubles champions, with Irvine and Amy Sineath deservedly sharing the best overall performance prize after their twin successes.

GEORGE Robesten was a second half substitute as Ross County made it four away wins from their last five after a convincing victory over Motherwell.

Robesten dropped to the bench after starting the last two matches, but played the last 20 minutes as the Staggies comfortably beat the Steelmen 3-0 at Fir Park.

That result, coupled with Dundee’s loss to Aberdeen, saw County leapfrog the Dees into 10th place in the table.

Spencer Moreland also dropped to the bench for title-chasing Brechin City for their home match against Buckie Thistle as part of a raft of changes on Saturday.

And that possibly affected Brechin, who twice had to come from behind to earn a 2-2 draw.

Moreland was brought on in the 66th minute and was on the pitch when Brechin equalised for a second time.

The result leaves them two points behind top side Brora Rangers, but with a game in hand in the Highland League.

Brora eased to a 2-0 win over Turriff United, in a game that former Scalloway forward John Allan started for Turriff.

He was unable to make a dent in Brora’s title tilt though and was subbed off in the second half.

THERE was no away day joy for Shetland’s men’s volleyballers on Saturday, with back-to-back defeats in Dundee.

The blues went down in three sets – 25-18, 25-14, 25-17 – to Dundee Volleyball Club in their first match.

And though they put up more of a fight against Glasgow Mets 2’s in the second fixture, losing by three sets to one, it was another defeat for the volleyballers.

SHETLAND men’s hockey side suffered a heavy loss in their Scottish Hockey reserve cup fixture on Sunday.

The squad, which was made up of nine players from Shetland and seven from Orkney, were soundly beaten by Western Wildcats 3’s in Aberdeen to end their cup involvement.

The men’s side has been formed in recent years and aims to give the players competitive cup experience.
