Arts / Three-day traditional youth music gathering announced
A NEW traditional youth music gathering is set to take place for the first time in April.
Shetland fiddler Catriona Macdonald will be joined by guest tutors as she leads the three-day event, which is being called Northern Trad Youth and is set to take place at Mareel in Lerwick.
The event, which will be held between 16 and 18 April, will be suitable for S1-S6 players of any acoustic instrument at an intermediate/advanced level.
Shetland Arts said skills participants will be able to hone include aural training, first instrument and accompaniment technique, ensemble collaboration and stagecraft.
Each day will feature engaging workshops, tuition, group work and will be followed by informal early evening events and performance opportunities.
The gathering will culminate with an informal performance for participants’ family and friends on the Friday.
Catriona Macdonald is a founding member of Blazin’ Fiddles and String Sisters, while she is also the director for Newcastle University’s innovative folk degree programme.
Meanwhile the names of the guest tutors will be announced in due course.
