News / Driver caught doing almost twice speed limit by road police
A DRIVER was caught doing almost twice the speed limit in a 30mph zone by road policing officers in the isles for Lerwick’s Up Helly Aa.
Specialist officers from the Highlands and Islands road policing team were in Shetland last week to carry out proactive road safety patrols.
A total of 63 vehicles were stopped, with most interactions “positive” they said.
However 13 drivers were charged with speeding, including one driver doing 56mph in a 30mph area.
Five people were charged with mobile phone offences, five were charged with seatbelt offences and another five drivers were charged with offences relating to load security.
Six drivers were pulled up about the condition of their vehicle, and a further six were charged with offences related to their tyres.
Three people were charged related to MOT offences.
Constable Matthew Fothergill said: “Not wearing a seatbelt, using a mobile phone, and excessive speed are three of the five most prevalent factors in serious and fatal collisions.
“A significant number of the offences detected related to vehicle condition and load security, and we encourage all road users to regularly check their vehicles and loads to ensure they are safe.
“The majority of drivers stopped during this operation were cooperative and receptive to the advice given.”
“We remain committed to improving road safety across the Highlands and Islands and thank the public for their engagement during this operation.”
