Education / Annual review underway into Skeld school mothballing
PARENTS in the Skeld Primary School catchment area are being contacted by the council as part of an annual review into the school’s mothballing.
Councillors took the decision to mothball the Westside school last year due to the number of children on the roll.
Shetland West councillor Liz Peterson said she was aware that forms were being sent out to parents in the catchment area “with regard to unmothballing the school”.
A spokesperson for Shetland Islands Council (SIC) confirmed the engagement is part of an annual review process.
“In line with the procedures around the annual review of a mothballed school, the director of children’s services is required to collate information annually as to the potential number of pupils who would enrol in Skeld Primary School, if the school were to be considered for reopening,” they said.
Meanwhile it was recently confirmed that the SIC will not be progressing with the possible reopening of the mothballed Papa Stour Primary School.
A “trigger” event happened last year when two families moved to the island, but it is understand one has since left.
