LORD lieutenant Lindsay Tulloch and council convener Andrea Manson led the laying of wreaths at a short ceremony today (Monday) at the county war memorial in Lerwick to mark Holocaust Memorial Day.
Radina Mackay of Shetland Inter Faith said a prayer before the first wreaths were laid.
Wreaths were also laid on behalf of the Legion Scotland Lerwick Branch and Highland Reserve Forces and Cadets Association.
This year’s Holocaust Memorial Day marks the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi concentration camp complex, and the 30th anniversary of the genocide in Bosnia.
The theme for 2025 is ‘For a Better Future’. Lerwick Town Hall will also be lit purple this evening to mark Holocaust Memorial Day.
A TRIO of properties have been put up for sale by Shetland Islands Council – from public toilets to a former fire station.
The council is seeking offers for the Brae public toilets, the ex-Skerries fire station and the former Aurora Ink tattoo studio premises in Lerwick.
In each case there is no asking price specified. Details of all properties can be viewed online.
The Brae toilets and the former Skerries fire station have not been open for a number of years, while the Aurora Ink studio on Mounthooly Street closed last year.

A NUMBER of people in Shetland have reported receiving emails, supposedly from the DVLA, informing them that their vehicle tax is overdue.
The email includes a link through to a bogus website which closely resembles the original, and where payment options are available.
Shetland Islands Council’s trading standards service is asking anyone who has been contacted in this way firstly to check their vehicle’s status on the DVLA website.
Anyone suspecting a scam should report it by contacting trading standards on 01595 744887, or Police Scotland on 101.
THE COUNCIL has launched a public consultation on the current provision of free period products in the community.
A survey has been launched to hear from anyone who uses sanitary products, may use them in the future and those who collect them on behalf of others.
Shetland Islands Council has supported the Scottish Government initiative to make period products freely available to anyone who needs them. Free period products are available both online and at local pick-up points.
Welcoming the policy, SIC leader Emma Macdonald said: “Not only has this policy led to enabling free access to period products for people across Shetland, it has also led to more discussion about periods, helping to normalise that.”
People can access the consultation here. Anyone preferring a paper copy is asked to contact the Solarhus reception on 01595 743888. The survey will close at 5pm on 14 February.
