Business / Large events hope as 11 folk complete security training

SIA door supervisor training candidates with Shetland Tall Ships Ltd directors Bryan Peterson (back left) and Sandra Laurenson (back right), and trainer Michael Murdoch (front left).

THERE is positive news for the local events scene after eleven candidates completed a seven-day course to train to become licensed door supervisors.

They will be able to work with local venues and promoters at standing concerts and larger events, in compliance with legal requirements for security staff.

There has been a shortage of Security Industry Authority (SIA) certified door staff in Shetland, which has been a factor behind a lack of standing concerts being held at Mareel in recent years, for example.

Security staff have also had to be taken up from down south for some recent large events, such as the Tall Ships last year.

The training scheme was organised by Emma Miller of Realta Events Management under contract from Shetland Tall Ships Ltd, which had remaining funding from Shetland Islands Council and Event Scotland to use for the purposes of training security staff in Shetland.

Michael Murdoch from Highland Training Group delivered the course in Lerwick to candidates who applied to take part.

Following four exams undertaken on the final day, candidates will be able to apply for their door supervisor licences once results are confirmed and all the paperwork is completed.

Following the application process through the SIA, they should be available for work in the local events industry around mid February.

Miller said: “We’ve had a really great group of folk on the course this past week, who have all engaged really well and I know they’re going to be a great asset to the events industry in Shetland going forward.

“It’s brilliant that the Tall Ships Races event has been able to continue to benefit the events industry by providing this legacy of locally based security staff.”

Once licensed, the individuals will be available to work for any local agency or promoter.

After what has been a barren few years for non-seated gigs at Mareel, there is already one standing event at Mareel up for sale for later in the year – an AC/DC tribute act who are coming up to Shetland in November.
