Community / Sharon’s swapshop raises thousands for charity

A TOTAL of £6,500 has been raised for charity after Sharon Deyell’s popular swapshop returned on Sunday.

The money will be given to Clan Cancer Support and the Viking Genes project.

It was Sharon Deyell’s 14th swapshop held to date, with more than £60,000 now raised for charity over the years.

The long-running swapshop allows people to pick up clothes and accessories in return for a donation.

It also means folk can have a clear out by donating items.

The items are donated by people in the community – and TV presenter Lorraine Kelly, who again offered a piece of clothing for the swapshop’s raffle.

She donated a sparkly jacket she wore at the Royal Variety Performance last year in London, as well as a signed photo of her meeting King Charles with the outfit on.

A Burra Bear was also donated for the raffle.

The latest swapshop was held at the Aith Hall on Sunday afternoon, with nine year old Bobby-Joe Johnson cutting the ribbon to open the event.

People attending the swapshop were encouraged to take a bag and fill it up with clothes before making a donation.

There was also tea and homebakes on offer too.

Deyell said it was “such a brilliant day, with an amazing total” raised.

She paid tribute to the “army” of Swapshop volunteers spent all day Saturday setting up, with folk queuing up before the event opened at midday on Sunday.

“There were far more clothes were donated than I ever expected this year, I thought it might be a peerie event this year but that didna happen,” Deyell said.

“The raffle tickets sellers were kept busy all day selling raffles and the teapot pourers never stopped through in the teas.”
