Council / Reduced speed limit in Scalloway proposed by SIC

A REDUCED 20mph speed limit in Scalloway has now been formally proposed by Shetland Islands Council following public consultation.

As the map below shows, speed limits across the village would drop from 30mph to 20mph, including in East Voe, if approved.

When heading into Scalloway, it is proposed that the 20mph limit would kick into force on Mill Brae.

With proposals in East Voe only for residential areas, no changes are proposed to the road which runs from the junction at the bottom of Mill Brae out towards the Trondra Bridge.

Anyone wishing to object to the proposed traffic order must send in an objection in writing to the SIC’s director of infrastructure services by 21 February.

A public meeting was held in Scalloway in November to allow people to have a say on the idea of 20mph limits in the village.

The move to 20mph comes amid a national push for lower limits in built-up areas.

There are also proposals for some roads in Lerwick to be taken from 30mph to 20mph.

A report to councillors late last year also said 20mph limits could be rolled out to more rural areas in the future, with parts of Virkie, Baltasound and Mossbank among those mentioned.
