Court / Lerwick assault leaves victim scarred for life
THREE MEN who assaulted a man in Lerwick to his severe injury will be sentenced at the High Court in Edinburgh next month.
Rhys Chan, 32, Tyler Kidd, 30, and Kyle Swannie, 28, pleaded guilty via their lawyers to assaulting their victim on 22 November 2023 to his severe injury and permanent disfigurement.
During the assault he was repeatedly struck with an axe and knife which left him scarred for life.
Chan then tried to escape by plane the next day using a fake name. He was arrested and appeared at Lerwick Sheriff Court the following day, where he was remanded in custody.
Kidd is said to have travelled to Lerwick’s ferry terminal hidden in the boot of a vehicle to try and escape on 29 November.
Chan and Kidd also each admitted to a charge of attempting to pervert the course of justice.
Kidd further pleaded guilty to a separate earlier assault on the same man at the Trench Bar in Lerwick on 17 September 2023. This was also said to have been to the man’s injury.
Prosecutor John Macpherson told the hearing at Glasgow High court today (Wednesday) that further information on the crimes will be heard when the case next calls.
Lord Young adjourned the case until 12 February at Edinburgh High Court.
