Health / Walk-in vaccination clinics scheduled amid expected rise in flu numbers
NHS Shetland says it expects the number of flu cases to rise in the coming weeks as people attend local events.
Numbers of cases of flu have been rising across Scotland, but up to now Shetland has had less compared to the rest of the country.
Scottish health secretary Neil Gray recently said the country’s NHS is facing “very high levels” of winter pressure after a rise in flu cases.
NHS Shetland said getting vaccinated is one of the most effective ways to stop flu from spreading and to reduce the impact it has on “us and our community”.
It comes as the fire festival season kicked off this past weekend in Scalloway, with Lerwick’s Up Helly Aa next up at the end of January.
NHS Shetland has issued guidance on “staying well this fire festival season”.
“If you are eligible for flu or Covid-19 vaccine and you haven’t had an appointment, yet you can attend one of the following walk-in clinics at Grantfield Vaccination Centre,” an NHS Shetland spokesperson said.
“Please note that Covid-19 vaccines can only be given until Friday 31 January 2025 (unlike previous years where you had until the end of March to attend for an appointment).”
The dates for walk-in clinics are as follows:
- Monday 13 January: 10am – 12pm or 2pm – 4pm
- Tuesday 14 January: 10am – 12pm
- Wednesday 15 January: 10am – 12pm or 2pm – 4pm
- Thursday 16 January: 10am – 12pm
- Friday 17 January – 10am – 12pm
NHS Shetland said anyone preferring to book an appointment is asked to email shet.vaccination-team@nhs.scot or phone 01595 743319.
