Lerwick Up Helly Aa 2020.

A “TASTE of Shetland” will be on offer at the museum in Lerwick the day before the town’s Up Helly Aa.

The annual event will return on Monday 27 January, with a pop-up “seafood shack” in the Hay’s Dock space serving up local fish.

There will also be living cooking demonstrations, and food and drink producer stalls.

The event is free entry, and will run from 11am to 6pm.

Meanwhile the usual Fiery Sessions traditional music concerts return on Up Helly Aa day itself at Mareel, although at the time of writing there appears to be only two tickets left.

PLANS have been submitted to use the former Peerie Foxes nursery in Lerwick for residential purposes.

Peerie Foxes owner Caroline Henderson has applied for permission to change the use of the building – in the town’s Fox Lane – from a daycare to residential.

The application does not state how many residential units could be created if the change is approved.

Peerie Foxes, which is a privately-run childcare business, moved to a new home at the former Salvation Army building on Lerwick’s North Road in June 2022.

Shetland Islands Council’s roads department have offered no objections to the potential change, saying there will be adequate parking available at the old swimming pool car park for any new development.

NHS SHETLAND says it has been alerted to a rise in scam GP phone calls.

Members of the public receive a call appearing to be from their GP asking them to press a button to update their details.

Some of these messages suggest that if the person does not update their details, they will be removed from the GP practice list.

NHS Shetland said it will only phone patients to arrange appointments or to pass on results as the GP requests.

It added they do not contact patients asking them to update their personal details in the manner set out in the scam alert.

Anyone who receives a call they are unsure about is urged to hang up and contact their home GP practice directly.

FAMILIES are being reminded that if they wish to keep any Christmas wreaths and floral tributes laid at burial grounds in Shetland then they should remove them before 31 January.

Preparations will soon begin in burial grounds for the grass cutting season.

From 1 February onwards, burial grounds staff will collect and dispose of any non-funeral related wreaths and flowers either lying directly on the grass or not within suitable receptacles, where a permanent memorial exists.

The council said where no permanent memorial exists, staff will endeavour to leave one floral tribute in the memorial area until such time as it significantly deteriorates.

Funeral related tributes are normally disposed of three weeks after the funeral. The council added that staff will endeavour to leave one funeral tribute until it has deteriorated.

Anyone with queries on this is asked to contact burial services by email burials@shetland.gov.uk or on 01595 744853.

COUNCILLORS are expected to receive an update on the Lerwick Lanes project in the spring.

In May elected members picked their preferred option for the potential redevelopment of land in and around the old swimming pool car park.

However there has been some concern in the community over the potential loss of some parking spaces there.

A spokesperson for Shetland Islands Council said there is no specific update with the project at the moment, but councillors should receive a committee report in the spring.

The preferred option picked by elected members was described as a “compromise” of housing, parking and garden space, with Gladstone Terrace potentially being extended.
