PEOPLE are being urged to kick off their New Year with 28 days of physical activity for the opportunity to win prizes.

Everyone is encouraged to be active for at least 15 minutes a day from Friday 3 January until Thursday 30 January.

The Jump Start January challenge is being organised by the council’s sports and leisure service, and is returning after first being conceived in 2023.

Staff from Shetland Islands Council, NHS Shetland, Ability Shetland, ZetTrans and Shetland Recreational Trust were among a group coming up with the idea, aimed at getting people moving after the festive period.

People can do whatever activity they like – a walk or jog, swim in their local pool, local fitness class or sport – and can even just do some exercise from the comfort of their own living room.

A return trip from Shetland to Aberdeen for four people on NorthLink Ferries, with a cabin, is among the prizes being offered, with a weekly prize draw taking place.

A bigger prize draw will follow at the end of the challenge for people who were active on all 28 days.

Anyone looking to take part can send their weekly activities to Shetland Sport and Leisure on Facebook, or by emailing them a list to activeschools@shetland.gov.uk

More information about the challenge can be found at www.shetland.gov.uk/jumpstartjanuary
