Letters / Take back control
Sadly, it could be very likely that the UK Labour government will sell out Shetland’s rich fishing grounds, fishermen’s livelihoods and its economy in the forthcoming EU fishing negotiations – by repeating and adding to the devastating follies of Cameron’s Brexit.
Democracy in action or the result of malign governance from many hundred miles away?
Shetlanders are well aware of the stances taken by the Greens (MPAs) and by the Scottish SNP granting more offshore wind licences (in the dubious quest for zero carbon) with the connivance of Westminster which would result in more offshore wind turbines floaters.
The ‘independence’ position of the SNP would also require it to give way to the EU on fishing to Shetland’s detriment, cheered on by the Lib Dems.
The local SIC by-election in January could have presented an opportunity for a candidate associated with the fishing industry (perhaps even a senior serving fisherman) to stand for election to ensure fishing’s voices are heard and acted upon in the council chamber as perhaps other hopefuls with different backgrounds may not be so informed or inclined.
Election of a fishery oriented person should result in SIC pressure being brought to bear on the UK and also through the MSP and MP to safeguard Shetland’s fishing and wider economy in the future.
There will be further opportunities for candidates associated withthe fishing industry to stand in the 2026 and 2027 elections toprotect Shetland’s interests.
Shetlanders compare their present subservient (there is no need to be such) status and situation for the last 500 years, vis a vis Faroe who have control over its own territory, waters and all that goes on therein for the benefit of its successful population of 53,000 against 23,000 in Shetland.
Every picture tells a story. What’s to be done about it? Take back all control, Shetland as a Crown Dependency may well suit.
